Balan wonderworld face6/18/2023 Unfortunately, outside of an opening cinematic that establishes only the barest, Balan Wonderworld never attempts to explain what the main plot is or even why Leo and Emma have to do anything. But Balan’s evil counterpart Lance has teamed up with evil creatures known as the Negati to feed on people’s fears and mess with a the balance, so it’s up to Leo and Emma to journey through the worlds and individual tales of a dozen other people in order to stop them. One day, they come across a mysterious theater, and upon entering, are whisked away by the enigmatic jester-like figure known as Balan to Wonderworld, a place where people’s happy memories and emotions mix with their negative ones, creating personal worlds out of them. I bring this all up because here’s Balan Wonderworld, the new platformer and spiritual successor to Nights into Dreams from Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima, and it’s easy to feel déjà vu.īalan Wonderworld sees you playing as either Leo or Emma (or both in the co-op mode), two kids with their own personal insecurities or anxieties. But alas, despite this, the well may have been too tainted by the first outing that everyone was banking on. 9 still arguably had potential, and the Mighty Gunvolt crossover games showed that Beck and company could still make it in a good platformer. Alas, things didn’t work out so well, and the end product was, to quote our review, “aggressively mediocre.” And it’s a shame, because the world of Mighty No. After the announcement, fan support was through the roof, to the point of depicting Mega Man passing the torch over to what would surely be a stunning achievement in platforming. ![]() It was planned as a spiritual successor to a legendary and beloved yet (at the time) ignore gaming franchise that we all wanted to see return. ![]() Especially in a boss fight when you’re moving quickly and tactically. You may remember the initial reactions to Mighty No. Except the keys are normally very close by. All costumes are locked by “keys,” so you can’t just grab one and switch. It’s not the only when it feels like it costume, though it isn’t as offensive as the Box Fox that turns into a box with your movement momentum and sometimes could send you careening off the world map. But Balan Wonderworld really never feels dark enough to need it. Lovely Lantern lights up when it feels like it in your immediate area. Decisions, decisions! It’s especially worse since both of those examples involve outfits found in the same worlds.īut those aren’t the only frustrations tied to outfits. Which one are you going to choose? Hm? Dynamic Dolphin and Jellyjolt both can swim through water blocks to reach new areas and jump, but Jellyjolt’s jump is electrified and better for also dealing with enemies. Well, Pounding Pig also jumps and can flutter a bit, but it also ground pounds. So say Jumping Jack can jump and has something of a Yoshi flutter jump. Especially since many costumes offer the same abilities as others, only better. Except it suffers from a situation where you don’t need 80 if you have a fraction that work well. Balan Worldworld has a whopping 80 costumes to acquire. You restore them by donning costumes with special abilities and collecting enough Balan statues to unlock the next group of worlds. She finds herself in the colorful Wonderworld, where 12 people in despair are trapped in 12 worlds. ![]() She finds herself at Balan’s theater and learns her own heart can be repaired if she aids others. ![]() In the case of Emma, my avatar, she runs out of a mansion sad because the maids are looking at her and whispering. You don’t know exactly why, exactly, because Balan is the only “person” who speaks. Your tale begins with one of two children who is very sad. (Hopefully, Monster Manor and Ultimate Angler get nods too.) But people tend to forget about the “misses” like Rodea the Sky Soldier and Ivy the Kiwi? Which is a shame, because then people might have had a better idea of what was coming with Balan Wonderworld, a bland and confounding game with missing pieces and bad design decisions.īecause so much is missing, you only have the vaguest idea of what is happening in Balan Wonderworld. This means fondly remembering titles like Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, Billy Hatcher, and NiGHTs into Dreams. When people bring up Yuji Naka, they emphasize the great games he’s made.
